Vanguard Dividend Growth Fund Downgraded After Manager Change
Vanguard Dividend Growth Fund's rating was cut to Bronze from Gold after a manager change and process overhaul, raising uncertainty about its future.

Manager Change and Process Overhaul
Vanguard Dividend Growth Fund (VDIGX) has been downgraded to a Bronze Medalist Rating from Gold, following a change in its management team and a significant shift in its investment process. The fund's People and Process Pillar ratings were also reduced to Average from Above Average.
Portfolio manager Peter Fisher stepped down on July 8, 2026, after a brief tenure that began in January 2024. Subadvisor Wellington appointed Tim Casaletto and Tom Levering as comanagers. While both are experienced investors, their limited dividend-focused track records and backgrounds in cyclical sectors raise questions about their fit for the strategy.
The new managers have broadened the fund's mandate to include companies that return capital through share repurchases and select cyclical firms with strong balance sheets. This roughly doubles the investable universe to 500 companies, providing greater flexibility but placing more emphasis on the managers' ability to assess quality. The revised approach also includes a new research structure with six sector liaisons connecting the managers to Wellington's 61-person global industry analyst team, replacing the previous siloed approach.
Portfolio decisions will now prioritize business growth over opportunistic valuations, and the managers intend to sell companies more quickly when fundamentals deteriorate. While the changes have merit, they represent a significant departure from the strategy's long-standing process and introduce considerable uncertainty.
Other Fund Rating Changes
In addition to the Vanguard fund, Morningstar made several other rating adjustments. AB Large Cap Growth Fund (APGZX) was downgraded to Bronze from Silver, with its Process Pillar rating reduced to Average from Above Average. The downgrade reflects lower conviction in the fund's execution and risk management. The managers have been slow to recognize weakening business quality, as seen in their holding of Lululemon despite prolonged struggles. Risk management also needs improvement, as the process allows for large underweights in index heavyweights like Apple (AAPL) and Tesla (TSLA), which have hurt performance.
Conversely, JPMorgan Mid Cap Growth Fund (JMGMX) was upgraded to Gold from Silver, with its Process Pillar rating raised to Above Average from Average. The upgrade reflects increased confidence in the fund's prudent investment framework, which seeks companies with underappreciated growth prospects and durable competitive advantages. The approach is more benchmark-conscious than many peers, with position sizing relative to the index and a focus on avoiding missing its largest winners. This discipline has resulted in moderate annual turnover of 42% to 67% over the past five years.
T. Rowe Price U.S. Equity Research Fund (PCCOX) received a Silver Medalist Rating, its first 100% analyst-driven rating, with Above Average People and Process Pillar ratings. The fund is managed by Jason Polun, Ann Holcomb, and Jason Nogueira, with roughly 30 US equity analysts running industry-specific sleeves. Despite recent staff reductions, T. Rowe Price's research team remains deep and well-resourced. The fund's broad, benchmark-aware portfolio emphasizes security selection over allocation tilts, and its disciplined approach is difficult for smaller competitors to replicate.
What it means for income investors
These rating changes highlight the importance of monitoring fund management and process stability. For income investors, the Vanguard Dividend Growth Fund's shift in strategy may alter its risk-return profile, potentially affecting its suitability for those seeking consistent dividend growth. As always, past performance is not indicative of future results, and investors should consider their own objectives and risk tolerance.
