Dividend Details and Eligibility

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has begun distributing $5 billion in dividends to its auto policyholders, marking the largest dividend in the company's history. The dividend was announced in February, and payments started on July 31. According to State Farm, more than 49 million vehicle owners are eligible to receive payments this summer.

Eligibility extends to customers who had a State Farm personal auto insurance policy active at any point in 2025. Current coverage is not required. To receive a payment, a customer's share of the dividend, based on premium payments and state, must be at least $10.

Payment Process and Amounts

Qualifying customers with a registered email address will receive instructions to access a payment portal and choose their preferred payment method. Those without a registered email will automatically receive a check by mail. Customers can check their payment status at sfdividend.com.

State Farm has not specified an end date for the payments, but noted that they are being sent in waves by state. As of the latest update, over 7.2 million checks have been mailed, with an additional 3.8 million scheduled to go out in the following week.

The average dividend payment is $100 per vehicle, but individual amounts vary. Payments are calculated as a percentage of premiums paid, ranging from 4% to 10% depending on the customer's state.

What it means for income investors

This dividend distribution reflects State Farm's strong underwriting performance and financial stability. While State Farm is a mutual company and not publicly traded, the payout underscores the potential for policyholder dividends in the insurance sector, which can be a consideration for those evaluating insurance investments.
