State Farm to Distribute $5 Billion Dividend to Auto Policyholders
State Farm Mutual will pay out $5 billion in dividends to eligible auto insurance customers, marking the largest such distribution in its history.

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has announced a one-time cash-back dividend totaling $5 billion for qualifying auto insurance customers. This marks the largest dividend payout in the company's more than 100-year history, according to a company statement.
Eligibility and Payment Details
The dividend applies to private passenger auto policies issued by State Farm Mutual that were in force at any point between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025. The distribution covers more than 49 million insured vehicles nationwide. Individual payments are calculated as a percentage of the premium paid on each qualifying policy during 2025, ranging from 4% to 10% depending on the state where the policy is assigned.
State Farm will notify eligible customers via email or letter. Those with an email address on file will receive instructions to access a payment portal, where they can choose between a digital payment or a paper check. Customers without an email address will automatically receive a check by mail.
Reason for the Dividend
The company attributes the dividend to its financial strength and better-than-expected underwriting performance in 2025. As a mutual company, State Farm says it can return value directly to policyholders while maintaining financial reserves to meet future obligations.
“As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future,” said Jon Farney, President and CEO of State Farm Mutual. “That translated this year to lower auto rates and cash back in the form of a $5 billion policyholder dividend.”
Distribution Timeline and Customer Support
Because the dividend covers more than 49 million insured vehicles, the nationwide distribution will take several months to complete. Customers with questions about eligibility or payment can contact State Farm's Dividend Customer Contact Center at 1-888-808-9532 or reach out to their local State Farm agent.
What it means for income investors
This payout underscores the financial stability of mutual insurance companies, which can return excess profits to policyholders rather than shareholders. For income-focused investors, it highlights the potential for non-traditional dividend sources, though such distributions are not guaranteed and depend on underwriting performance and company decisions.
