Caterpillar's Dividend Growth Strengthens in 2026, but Yield Remains Low

Dividend Increase and Cash Flow

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) raised its quarterly dividend by 8% to $1.63 per share in June 2026, bringing the annualized dividend to $6.52 per share. This marks the 32nd consecutive year of dividend increases, maintaining its status as a Dividend Aristocrat. The increase was supported by robust cash generation: in the second quarter of 2026, the company reported $4.4 billion in enterprise operating cash flow and ended the quarter with $6.7 billion in cash. Dividends paid during the quarter totaled $0.7 billion, while share repurchases amounted to $1.5 billion.

For the first half of 2026, enterprise operating cash flow reached $6.2 billion, and dividends paid rose to $1.399 billion from $1.336 billion in the same period of 2025. The company's dividend history shows consistent growth, with the latest increase being the sixth consecutive year of high-single-digit quarterly hikes.

Business Performance and Dividend Sustainability

Caterpillar's underlying business has improved significantly. Second-quarter sales and revenues increased 24% year-over-year to $20.5 billion, with profit per share jumping to $7.77 from $4.62. Adjusted profit per share was $8.17, and operating profit margin expanded to 20.9% from 17.3%. Management reported record MP&E free cash flow of $5.1 billion for the quarter, up about $2.8 billion from the prior-year quarter, and expects full-year 2026 MP&E free cash flow to land in the top half of its $6 billion to $15 billion target range.

This strong cash flow provides ample coverage for the dividend. The company has stated its intention to return all MP&E free cash flow to shareholders through dividends and buybacks over time. The latest dividend hike signals confidence in future cash generation.

Yield and Valuation Considerations

Despite the solid fundamentals, Caterpillar's current yield is very low. At a share price of $827.90 on August 21, the annualized dividend of $6.52 represents a forward yield of approximately 0.79%. This is a small income stream compared to traditional dividend stocks. The stock has appreciated sharply, compressing the yield even as dividends rise. The stock closed at $881.65 on August 17, with a 52-week high of $1,073.46.

Caterpillar is a cyclical industrial company, and its strong 2026 cash generation may not be sustainable during economic downturns. A slowdown in construction, mining, or industrial equipment demand could pressure earnings and free cash flow. Additionally, the company has allocated substantial funds to buybacks: in the first half of 2026, it spent $6.522 billion on share repurchases versus $1.399 billion on dividends. This indicates a combined capital-return strategy rather than a pure income focus.

What it means for income investors

Caterpillar's dividend appears well-supported by strong cash flow and a long growth streak, but the low yield means it offers limited current income. For income-focused investors, the stock may be less attractive compared to higher-yielding alternatives, though its dividend growth potential remains notable.
